Get an Interior Design License For Your Better Job

Being a recognized professional in interior design requires license by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. Taking the exam given by NCIDQ results in being Certified or interior design License depending on your individual state’s or province’s policies. Here is how to get a certificate or license in interior design. Interior decorators can and often do their work without formal credentials, but to call yourself an interior designer, you may have to have formal certification: More than 20 states require a state-issued license. Even in states that don’t require a license, larger clients and most interior design or architectural firms are apt to insist on certification by the respected American Society of Interior Design. To get this certification, you’ll need to pass an exam given by the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). Here is how to get a certificate or license in interior design.

Step 1
Check your state’s or province’s policies about interior design certificates or licenses. You may have to contact your local board for interior design to do paperwork before applying for the NCIDQ exam. In any case the exam is essential for getting a certificate or license, but the requirements from your state or province may need to be met first.

Step 2
Complete a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in interior design. Choosing a program that is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation — CIDA is helpful, but other options are available as well.

Step 3
Get three years of work experience in interior design. Two years of the experience should be done after schooling is complete. To make sure the NCIDQ’s requirements are met for experience in interior design, NCIDQ, has a program which makes getting the right experience easy.

Step 4
Confirm the right documents and fees are ready before applying for the NCIDQ exam. This information is found on the NCIDQ website.

Step 5
Apply for the NCIDQ exam online by following the directions given exactly.

Step 6
Mail documents for the application.

Step 7
Pay the application review fee.

Step 8
Check dates of the exam and fees to be ready.

Step 9
Register for the NCIDQ exam and pay fees after being informed of your application’s acceptance.

Step 10
Take and Pass the NCIDQ Exam.

Step 11
Receive the NCIDQ Credential. Depending on your state or providence’s requirements, this may be considered a license.

Step 12
Continue to be educated in interior design and submit proof to NCIDQ to keep the credential or license.

Interior designers receive on the job training and normally need 1 to 3 years of training before they can advance to higher level positions. Experienced designers in large firms may advance to chief designer, design department head, or some other supervisory position. Some experienced designers open their own firms or decide to specialize in one aspect of interior design. Other designers leave the occupation to become teachers in schools of design or in colleges and universities. Many faculty members continue to consult privately or operate small design studios to complement their classroom activities.
